Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa is set to open in November with 201 rooms on a 22-acre site southwest of Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive. This is an extensive redevelopment of the former Cottonwoods resort that was tucked behind the former Borgata Italian village shopping center.
Hyatt Hotels Corp. will mange the resort under its relatively new Andaz brand. There are 13 other Andaz hotels, including in Amsterdam, London, Tokyo, New York, California, Costa Rica and Hawaii.
The other new resort is on the Mountain Shadows site along Lincoln Drive at 56th Street. This is a completely new $65 million hotel with a 180 rooms and adjacent condominium units.
The original Mountain Shadows opened in 1959 with a design that was part Arizona, part Palm Springs and a little bit of Las Vegas. It was just right for the Rat Pack or Mad Men types of of the era.
Mountain Shadows had a good run for close to 30 years before it was eclipsed by newer resorts in North Scottsdale. The hotel closed in 2004 and was torn down two years ago.
Woodbine Southwest of Texas is developing the new Mountain Shadows and Westroc Hospitality will operate it. Westroc runs the nearby Sanctuary on Camelback resort and Hotel Valley Ho. Woodbine was also involved developing the Westin Kierland Resort.
Mountain Shadows is set to open in early 2017.
