The home ownership rate in Phoenix-Scottsdale area was 63.4 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's up from 60.9 percent a year earlier and just below the U.S. rate of 63.7 in the last quarter of 2016.
U.S. home ownership peaked in June 2004 at 69.2 percent. It fell to 62.9 percent in the second quarter of 2016, the lowest it had been since 1965. In general, a shortage of affordable housing is keeping some renters from becoming buyers.
