Barneys, an exclusive fashion retailer, closed its 65,000 square foot store a little over a year ago after more than six years at Fashion Square.
The new retailer, which was not named in plans submitted to Scottsdale, would occupy about 17,000 square feet in two levels on the southeastern edge of Fashion Square. That location, fronting Scottsdale Road, would include a terraced public plaza with a cantilevered canopy.
The new store “will have a strong, open retail presence that will help further activate the eastern wing of the mall and adjacent streetscape.,” according to a site plan for the project.
Barneys had an entrance on the northeastern corner of its building but no displays for window shopping on Scottsdale Road. As downtown Scottsdale has become walkable, this new Fashion Square entrance could help draw tourists into the plaza and store.
Scottsdale Fashion Square is Arizona’s largest mall and has managed to stay vibrant with new stores even as other malls and department stores have been undercut by online shopping.
The Scottsdale Development Review Board will have to sign off on Fashion Square’s plans. There is no indication when a renovation would be done, but it stands to reason that the retailer would want to open by the holiday season of 2017 if possible.
